Harley Hydraulic Clutch Adjustment

QuestionHow do you adjust the Harley hydraulic clutch on an Ultra Classic 2013? Also, on a 2014 limited with a hydraulic clutch, do you still have to adjust the clutch pack. If so what is the best way?

Via Email

AnswerLike the primary chain adjustment on older models, clutch adjustment has gone away. No adjustment is needed for this hydraulic clutch.

July 28, 2016 – Harley-Davidson has issued a recall on 27,232 model year 2016 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the clutch master cylinder may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch, especially if the motorcycle has been parked for an extended period of time. When the engine is running and the motorcycle is in gear, if the clutch cannot be fully disengaged, the motorcycle may move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

The affected motorcycles include certain model year 2016 Electric Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCU), Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low (FLHTCUL), Ultra Limited Low (FLHTKL), Ultra Limited (FLHTK), CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE), Street Glide (FLHX), Street Glide Special (FLHXS), Road Glide Special (FLTRXS), Road Glide (FLTRX), Police Electra Glide (FLHTP), Road Glide Ultra (FLTRU), Fat Boy S (FLSTFBS), Softail Slim S (FLSS), and CVO Softail Pro Street Breakout (FXSE) motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the clutch master cylinder for the presence of gas in the fluid, if so, the dealer will flush the clutch system and rebuild the clutch master cylinder, free of charge. The recall began July 25, 2016. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 800/258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0169.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888/327-4236 (TTY 800/424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Harley-Davidson is recalling 45,901 motorcycles made between April 28 and Oct. 24, 2014, because the clutch master cylinder may not generate enough lift to disengage the clutch, creating a crash hazard.

When the engine is running and the motorcycle is in gear, if the clutch cannot be fully disengaged, the motorcycle may move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. The problem is especially acute if the motorcycle has been parked for an extended period of time.

The affected models are: 2014 and 2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCU), Electra Glide Ultra Classic – Twin Cooled (FLHTCU TC), Ultra Limited (FLHTK), Police Electra Glide (FLHTP), Street Glide (FLHX), Street Glide Special (FLHXS) and CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE); the 2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low (FLHTCUL), Ultra Limited Low (FLHTKL), Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low – Twin Cooled (FLHTCUL TC), Road Glide Special (FLTRXS), and Road Glide (FLTRX); and 2014 CVO Road King (FLHRSE).

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will flush the clutch system and rebuild the clutch master cylinder, free of charge. The recall was expected to begin April 23.

Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at (800) 258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0165.

I have had to fill my clutch reservoir with DOT4 twice in the last year, there are no leaks on the ground, where could that fluid be going? I don’t want to damage anything on my 2013 CVO Road Glide Custom.

2013 CVO Ultra Classic, while everything I read states the hydraulic clutch is not adjustable, my clutch level doesn’t grab till it is almost all the way out. Anything I can do about this?

Got the same problem. Noticed that on some take-offs, I can hear a screaming noise. everybody says that there is not clutch adjustment necessary. Sorry, I beg the difference. Harley got a problem and do not want to address the issue. When I brought this 40,000 dollar piece of junk, everybody was calling me Mister. Now I cannot get the dealer nor Harley to address several issues. Should have purchased a Boss Hoss!!!

I have a 2016 triglide. Any way to adjust the clutch lever to engage the clutch without having to let the lever all the way out, closer to the grip?

I have a 2011 HD ROAD GLIDE ULTRA CVO. My clutch lever now grabs right off the handle, just one or two millimeters right off the handle grip, it did used to grab midway through the release and now it sounds like the diaphragm in the handle is making an unusual sound. Two different Harley dealerships couldn’t find the part number for a clutch master cylinder rebuild kit. I am wondering if the rebuild kit is identical to the master cylinder for the right brake master cylinder? however I fear that would make too much common sense to be true. however it would seem to be cost effective to do so for whoever manufactured the part. Please advise .. Thank you.

    Very Respectfully,
    George

Hey George. The part # for the rebuild should be the same as used in the recall I would think.

When going 65 mph and I give the throttle a handful, the rpms go up but not the speed. It’s like the clutch is slipping. I have a 2014 ultra limited. What’s wrong?

      Hello Mark,

The actuating piston in the clutch release cover has crept all the way out.
Need to push it back in; just like a brake caliper piston.
Believe you can remove your derby cover and push the release rod through the mainshaft to compress piston to avoid removing clutch release lever.

I have a 2017 ultra limited and i often have a problem getting to first gear fromhigher gears when i come to a stop quickly. If a light changes and i stop before i can downshift each gear while rolling, i have to re engage the motor to be able to downshift. What is the cause of this and how do i fix it?

You should not be having such an issue.
If the m/c is still under warranty, we suggest bringing this issue to the dealership’s attention.
May need to flush & bleed your hydraulic clutch assembly or may be an issue with your master cylinder.

Thank you for your patience. In regards to your question-

Clutch adjustment is definitely the right place to start. It could have been adjusted incorrectly.
