Harley Speedometer Cable

Question I have a 1995 FXDWG and the Harley speedometer cable is making noise. Can you tell me how to change it?

Answer It is pretty easy to replace a speedo cable on your make/model m/c. Remove your dash. Look under your speedo head. You will be able to see where your cable screws onto your speedo. A stock speedo is held onto the dash plate with 2 E clips. Carefully remove those clips with a needle nose pliers. Now you can pull upwards on the speedo head and unscrew the cable with a pliers. Once the cable is free, you will be able to slide it down through the frame of your m/c. Now you can unscrew the other end of the cable from your speedo drive (you may need to use a pliers). Before you install the new cable; install a tie-wrap beneath the nut that secures your new cable to the speedo first. This is helpful to keep the nut from falling into the frame upon installation. Next run the cable through the frame. Thread it into the speedo drive. Secure the nut, on the top of the cable, to the speedo. Re install speedo head. Re install dash. You are on your way.

I have a 1991 FXSTC. I was trying to remove the speedometer to do some unrelated wiring, but I can't seem to get the speedo off with removing two additional wires besides the main speedo cable. One is screwed into the back of the speedo, the other seems to be soldered on. Is this normal?? Also, the 2 wires seem very short and since I can't remove the speedometer, I can't see where those 2 wires go.

What is the correct length for a speedo cable for a 86 FLSTC. I just busted my 2nd cable which is 38 1/2 inched long
