Primary Drain Plug

Question for Fix My Hog I’m about to drain my Primary case oil and adjust the chain. My manual says to leave the drain plug approx 4mm protruding from the case. I have a large plug requiring a male torx bit. My bike build date is Sept 2000, I’m assuming it is part of the MY01 release due to no Cam position sensor or provisions for one in the nose cone being present. This primary case drain plug is flush to the case. Is this correct?

Fix My Hog Answers Your primary drive drain plug is 1/8 NPT (National Pipe thread). It has to be prepped with teflon paste, and tightened snug. Approximately 14 to 21 foot pounds. You can not go by a visual to final tighten.

Everytime I change the primary fluid (every 5,000 miles - I always do a complete fluid change with AMSOIL), on my 2000 FLHTC-I, I use Teflon tape and torque the primary drain plug to 40 - 45 in/lb. If I torque to a higher torque, the drain plug (even though it is tapered) will just keep screwing itself into the primary cover until it goes the whole way through the drain hole. At 40 - 45 in/lb, it is a safe torque and the primary doesn't leak. I have read through my Harley service manual and Harley also published a booklet called "1997 - 2005 Ready Reference TORQUE VALUES", P/N: 99959-05 and I couldn't find a torque value specified anywhere for the primary drain plug torque value.
