That’s how I do it except I take off both plug leads so it wont start then crank over till oil comes out clean

Hi Steven. Either charge, or replace your battery.
If the old fuel smells bad; drain out as much as possible. Refill with 93 octane.
If this m/c is carbureted, drain the float bowl.

By: Dana https://www.fixmyhog.com/post/harley-oil-filter/comment-page-1/#comment-235424 Fri, 04 Sep 2015 06:50:31 +0000 http://www.fixmyhog.com/?p=127817#comment-235424 It makes no difference as the filter is on the return side of the pump to the oil tank. you can do what they call a 4 quart oil change. with the filter off put a drain pan under the oil filter mount, fill the oil tank run the engine untill the oil comes out clean-less than a quart. replace the filter,fill the oil tank , run the engine than check your oil level.
