Hello Howard,

Unfortunately, you can not just assume where a wire goes by only looking at its color or by red tape. If you can not visually see where the wire goes, you will have to use your test light or multimeter to determine it’s function.
Not sure about the bolt with a rubber boot that you mention.

There is a bolt covered with a rubber boot on top of the solenoid and I don’t know what goes there. Any help would be appreciated. I bought the bike disassembled.

I want to move put a smaller battery under the seat, and get rid of the flat side gas tank. Is there a battery box year that I can use under the seat, and is there a specific year tank that will fit my frame?

If the wire that you are mentioning is green and plugged in near the starter’s solenoid, it goes to terminal 87 on your starter relay.
If the wire is red or tan and located on top of the starter; @ the starter post with the positive cable, it should go to the copper post of your main breaker located on your splash guard.
