Checking for Harley engine noise? Harleys are known to be noisy engines because they are air cooled, however some develop a notable valve train noise, or a tick.

In this video Steve Knoble investigates a Harley engine noise or tick from this Sportster, and he covers the removal of the rocker box and rocker assembly for inspection. He then takes the parts to the bench where he inspects and measures all the rocker components for proper clearance and excessive wear, then replaces the worn parts, and follows that up with the reassembly process.

The Harley engine noise or tick could be a sign of excessive wear in a rocker bushing and that wear will cause a ticking or tapping noise. When that happens the rocker bore wears and opens up, too much oil will blow past, and the lubrication system will not achieve the proper pressure. Therefore the other spinning components will not get the proper oil pressure to have them operate freely. So because of that it is important to investigate taps and other odd noises your engine may start making.

This is the same procedure on all air cooled Sportster, Twin Cam, and Evo engines.
