In this session, you’ll learn about the equipment, tools and the process of stick welding. You will always remember your first weld, especially if it’s a good one. But to make sure you have a good first run, you’ll need to prepare. Bob will review his welding machine, welding sticks and most important how to protect yourself and your surroundings.
A clean, well-prepared surface is critical to achieve a successful end result when welding metal. Here, you’ll see how to degrease your work piece surfaces and final clean them with a wire wheel, wire brush, or preferably a grinding disc. You’ll also see details on rod angle, speed and stringer passes.
When making your first attempts at stick welding, it is typical and preferable to begin by working in a flat position. However, as you progress, you should practice welding out of your comfort zone. In this demonstration, Bob walks you through the basics of circumference, vertical, and horizontal angle stick welding.

This class on the Fundamentals of Stick Welding will help you expand your technical skills. Motorcycle and outdoor enthusiasts will find the need to weld different pieces of equipment over time as they wear and need repair.

Bob LaRosa, your instructor for the class, takes some time away from his motorcycle work to give us step-by-step help with the basics of stick welding. He has extensive training and a past career in the welding field to share with you.

Welding two pieces of metal together with a sparks and smoke may appear daunting, but it’s easy if you break it down into manageable steps, using a logical approach for the stick welding process. Our class video instruction teaches you how to do that, and provides the following key information:

  • How to make your first welds
  • Proper metal preparation and butt welding
  • Getting proper angles – You won’t always be on a bench!

Bob will cover the many different machines available for a variety of welding applications. Welding machines are typically powered from a 220 AC power source or, for portable applications, they will be powered by gasoline or diesel.

This video class will not only to inform and educate you, but we hope it will spark an interest for you to try something new. If you ever need something welded, it’s best to understand what needs to be done and what you’re paying for, if not doing it yourself.

Welding is a skill that takes patience, but is very rewarding. We hope this class either sparks an interest or at least gives a better appreciation for this very important, timeless trade.

In addition to your video instruction, this Class provides you with some downloadable bonus information, including a Class Guide that covers the key points in the class, a resources document, and an extra 54-minute video covering the basics of MIG Welding.
