Fix My Hog: DIY Harley Davidson Repair

Dear Clement—

I’m a home improvement junkie without a doubt and I dig your blog posts. However, I like to have some fun too. I understand that for you “fun” might imply some kind of insane running-through-the-woods-and-jumping-off-stuff kind of lunatic race but for me it means firing up my Harley and hitting the open road.

Problem is, the bike needs work and I want to do this myself too — but I don’t want to get in over my head. Any ideas?

Dear Lansing, Michigan —

My first idea is to be jealous. I love motorcycles and I love to ride. But I rarely get to any more. My second idea is to scope out FixMyHog.

Unlike the Harley manual and other literature, they have a pro mechanic SHOW you how to do it — on a real bike in a real shop rather than tell you what to do described by some cryptic drawing or photo.

This is why I prefer live home improvement demos. Most people who like to work with their hands are visual learners. You can read something 64 million times and kind of get it, but show you once and BAM — off to the races.

FixMyHog has some other cool things I dig, too. First, anytime I can get a cool T-Shirt, I’m in. Second, is their Hogger’s Area where you can bang around for more cool stuff for free.

Finally, a little note on their newsletter: There are people in their office. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of filling out e-forms and clicking “submit” and hoping someone will get back to me. “Submit” is starting to take on a new meaning.

Anyway, FixMyHog is the real deal and if you ride Harleys and turn wrenches, it is the ultimate resource for tuning and maintaining your ride.
