IW PRODUCT REVIEW Fix My Hog Touring Edition

In the last 20 years, the reliability of the modern motorcycles has lessened the amount of roadside genius that was necessary “back in the day.” This has allowed some riders to adopt a tool-less own-and-go relationship with their motorcycles.

There are also riders who, by nature, simply must wrench. Their home shops are filled with appliance-sized roll-arounds full of techie do-hickeys.

The Vast majority of riders fall somewhere in between. We would like to learn more about our bikes, if only someone would show us. Well, someone finally is.

Fix My Hog, Inc. has released a double DVD set, Fix My Hog Touring Edition, covering both Twin-Cam and Evo machines. This release is the second in a series that company owner Dennis Santopietro calls “your kick start to Harley-Davidson maintenance.” Like their earlier Softail version, this one was shot in a motorcycle repair shop with professional mechanics performing the maintenance in a clear step-by-step manner.

I enjoyed the first “chapter” which details all the necessary tools and the reasons for them. It also gives recommendations for ancillary items like gasket sealers and thread lockers. Interested novice wrenches can acquire tools as needed depending on the task at hand.

Throughout the 3-hour lesson, attention is paid to torque specs, and fasteners are nipped up with careful precision. Some service items like the strip / reassembly of the front forks, will be made easier by using a proprietary factory tool or two.

Additional chapters fully explain many service points recommended by The Factory to keep your Harley-Davidson happy. Upgrades or model changes in both the Evo and Twin-Cam designs are duly noted and explained.

Fix My Hog Touring Edition is a clear/precise teaching DVD that is aimed straight at owners with a desire to wrench their own. And for those own-and-go riders, wouldn’t be nice to be able to understand exactly what those shop guys are doing for your hard-earned money? It’s only $45.95 + S/H the price of one oil change?
