Mr. Product Tester - Fix My Hog’s Touring Edition DVD

Back in the day, when you wanted to learn the internal workings of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle you had two choices. You could learn by trial and error, and hoped the error didn’t kill you, or you could make friends with the local shop owner and hang out in the back learning from the mechanics. Of course that option usually involved bringing coffee, donuts and depending on the disposition of the shop owner, a six pack every so often.

‘That was before some genius invented the DVD. I have to say I’ve watched several “how to” video’s in my day and rewinding and pausing those bad boys just doesn’t cut the mustard when you’re trying to see exactly what is going on in the video. That puts this DVD out front from the start. Fix My Hog Touring Edition has everything you need to do your own service and maintenance to your TC or Evo Harley-Davidson. Now, here’s one caveat. If you don’t have the time or the inclination to do your own service and maintenance, then this video can’t help you. There’s no genie in the case that will pop out and do the work for you. That’s my problem. I have to pay the neighbor’s kid to cut my grass because my job testing new products keeps me so busy that I can’t change my mind, let alone my oil.

But, my friend JD has time and since he helped me with the review of the Softail edition, I thought I’d peg him for this one too. JD recently traded in his Heritage for an Electra Glide because he said his wife wanted a better seat. Judging by her backside, I’d say she needed a “bigger” seat.

But, that has nothing to do with this DVD. After careful review, JD gave it two thumbs up. Or rather a thumb and a half since he accidentally cut the other one off a couple of years ago before he understood the notion of shop safety. Which Bob, the host in this DVD does an excellent job of displaying, I told JD he could learn a thing or two from Bob.

If you’ve ever had the desire to care for your bike, but just didn’t want to spend years learning the basics then the answer is Fix My Hog. This DVD is like having a certified mechanic as your best friend. Only you’ve got to buy the tools because they don’t come with the DVD. Which is a suggestion for the DVD’s creator. Why not offer a complete package? All the tools you needs plus the DVD for one price? Hey, throw in a TV and DVD player too. Hey, it’s just a thought.

For anyone considering this DVD, you should honestly asses your wrenching ability. If you don’t know the difference between a torx wrench and a tortilla, then you’re going to have a bit of a learning curve to get the hang of servicing your bike. The good news is you can be a clueless novice and provided you buy the right tools, pay attention to the details, do what the man says, and take your time, you can get the hang of doing whatever needs doing. All without having to screw it up like we used to do. IF you’re an accomplished mechanic, then you’ll zip past the training wheels section to the exact spot you need to watch. Much faster than VCR. I would, however, recommend you set aside a couple hours to browse through the 24 chapters before that Saturday / Sunday maintenance day. $45.95 plus S/H. To order, call 619-269-9321 or order online at www.fixmyhog.com. Tell’em it was personally recommended by JD.
