Parts & Service Product Review

Touring Bolt-On Performance Edition from Fix My Hog®

More than a year ago, when I reviewed the Fix My Hog’s maintenance DVDs for Softails® and touring models, I thought these guys were on to something good- DVDs that demystified some of the routine maintenance procedures that shops charge big bucks for, but that most riders with no more than two thumbs could do themselves with a few simple hand tools. The Softail and touring DVDs were soon joined by one for the Sportster models, and now Fix My Hog has a new pair of DVD sets, one of which is titled Touring Bolt-On Performance Edition.

The three-disc DVD set is a logical extension of the earlier ones. Sure, adjusting the steering-head bearings on your bagger is a fairly involved job, but hey, so is installing and mapping a Power Commander on an EFI model, or installing braided steel brake lines, or replacing stock gauges with custom ones from Dakota Digital. Installing these performance upgrades and more – including 2-into-1 mufflers, slip-ons, air cleaners and manifolds, clutch cables, carbs and carb kits, inner and outer chrome primaries, and a high-performance clutch – are tackled chapter by chapter in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step method by on-camera wrench Bob LaRosa and Mark, his silent but capable assistant.

Bob and Mark demonstrate more than a dozen upgrades on several bikes including a Dyna and a number of EFI and carbureted FLs and Road Kings. It might seem to the backyard mechanic that they’re being a wee bit too fussy with their thread sealant, tie-downs and safety-first attitudes, but these guys are pros, and they know what they’re doing.

You’d be smart to do it their way, too. They not only show you how to do the job right, they show you it’s not as hard as you might think. With these DVDs, once you figure that part out, you’re on your way to saving money on many of the more common performance modifications.

There’s a second new three-disc performance DVD set, Softail/Dyna® Bolt-On Performance Edition, whose title is self-explanatory. Both it and the Touring Bolt-On Performance Edition have a suggested retail price of $49.95, and are available from Fix My Hog, www.fixmyhog.com
