Moving to the back of our 1988 Heritage, Mike is set up to service the Softail rear brake caliper. The caliper is retained to the caliper support bracket with 2 retaining pins. A T-40 torx bit is used to remove the pins on earlier Evolution models. For later years, a T-45 torx bit will need to be used.

In order to remove the Softail rear brake caliper, the caliper piston will need to be compressed inward. This is accomplished by tipping the caliper, by hand, with some force. Now, the caliper can be lifted off over the brake pads and brake pad retaining spring clip. Prior to removing the brake pad spring clip, it is important to note its orientation. It is clipped into the Softail rear brake caliper support bracket on each end.

Then, the wire is pulled over the brake pads as they are positioned in the caliper bracket. To release, simply lift the wire over the brake pads and push toward the wheel. Now the inner & outer brake pads can be removed. If brake pads are going to be reused, it is important to label the inner &/or outer pad as soon as they are removed. The brake pads become embedded and worn to the surface of the rotor on each side.

If inner & outer pads are swapped, there is a chance that the Softail rear brake caliper may have less stopping power and the brake may also begin the squeak or squeal. Inspect the brake pads and rotor for wear. Also inspect the rotor for possible warping. Do this by holding a straight edge across the rotor. If the rotor is even slightly warped, it should be replaced. A warped rotor can eventually cause the brake to lock up. Mike cleans the rear brake pads and rotor with brake clean and a clean rag. Brake pad shim clips are cleaned and reinstalled followed by the brake pads.

After the spring clip is correctly orientated, the Softail rear brake caliper is put into position and secured with the caliper pins.
