Electrical Problem '01 FXDXT

Question I own a 2001 FXDXT and developed an electrical problem on Harley. Riding down the road the electrical system seems to shut itself off. I turn the key off or shut the kill switch off and then back on and the bike fires up and runs fine. Can you offer any suggestions as to go about tracking down the cause? Thanks, Bruce

Answer Hi Bruce, I would start by replacing the main circuit breaker, I also need more information, is it fuel injected , does the headlight also go out, how many miles on the m/c , any modifications to the wiring or handlebar harness, does power come right back as soon as you turn the key off and then back on? Please get back to me and I would be happy to help you out.  Wrench Safe, FMH

Similarly, I own a 2002 FXDWG and developed an electrical problem. Riding down the road the electrical system seems to shut itself off. I turn the key off or shut the kill switch off and then back on and the bike fires up and runs fine. Can you offer any suggestions as to go about tracking down the cause? Mine is carbureted 1450cc, and it's only happened while doing about 60. It shuts off, and it may surge on and off a few times. As panic strikes (in traffic), I shut the switch on the tank off then back on and it fires up. May only happen once ever 700 miles. I dont know if the headlight goes off as Im typically a daytime rider and when it happens, im a little more concerned about dying in traffic so the light hasnt been seen. Although, the speedo goes to zero or at least tries to. Thoughts?

I have the same - 2002 Dyna WideGlide w/ carb. I'll be doing 70 and the spedo drops to zero in a second, and it may come back and happen 5 seconds later. If i shut switch off and back on, it will correct - only 9800 miles on it.

i friend of mine asked me to replace a broken internal cog belt for his procharger. (alot of the teeth were stripped off the belt). i put about 50 miles on it trouble free. now the bike shuts off while riding but starts right back up, ride alittle and shuts off again, restart repeat. the head light remains on when this happens but once in awhile it will blow 15 amp fuse for ecm (has a thundermax ecm). i checked the codes, it has several the two that bother me the most are p1001 system relay coil open/low, p0562 battery/ecm low voltage...everything seems good, battery is charging, relay is working, replaced both relays just because. i had an extra ignition switch that i tried, still stalls. maybe unrelated but the starter grinds alot of the time. i dont think the handlebar run switch is at fault either? i idled the bike from cold several times and it seems to stall at about 10 mins consistently, shorter when you restart it from there. the bike is 2004 fatboy, 124ci s&s, fuel injected, procharger, chopper, 50000 miles, wiring seems unmolested with the exception of directionals. thanks jim i believe that there seperated but could there be any remaining teeth from the belt getting between the crankshaft sensor and making it lose a signal? i have no codes for the crankshaft sensor.

Check your ground cable where it attaches to the frame.
