Steve has a 2012 Iron XL on the lift and is set up to demonstrate Sporster jiffy stand maintenance and repair. This Sportster jiffy stand demonstration is a basic repair that most riders can perform at home with only the need for basic hand tools.

Reasons for Sportster jiffy stand removal include correcting a squeaky stand, replacing the jiffy stand spring, replacing worn bushings, and replacing the stand itself.

In order to perform this repair, the motorcycle needs to be in an upright position. If an owner does not have access to a lift, a flat jack, or a wheel chock, have someone from home or a friend hold the motorcycle upright.

To remove the Sportster jiffy stand assembly, start by removing the top retaining clip. This clip should always be replaced once removed. Use a flat ended tool like a 1/4″ punch or drift to push down on the pin until it is completely out of the frame tab. As the pin is removed, it is important to keep track of the upper and lower bushings for reference, inspect, or reuse.

Before releasing and removing the spring, it is a good idea to note the spring end orientation on the frame and on the Sportster jiffy stand.

Once apart, it is important to thoroughly clean all parts that will be reused including the frame mounting tab.
Prior to reassembly, parts are lubricated with an aerosol never size.

Reassembly begins with the Sportster jiffy stand raised upward. Steve slides one bushing over the retaining pin. The spring is clipped over the frame tab and over the jiffy stand. The stand is then held into position while the retaining pin is pushed up through the frame tab and the stand.

Once in place, the upper bushing and retaining clip is installed.

Steve checks for proper swing motion of the assembly to verify that everything is correctly assembled. Sportster jiffy stand R&R is complete.
