We have been asked a couple times about Harley-Davidson ignition switch knob removal in our Harley Tips section. Here’s a quick video on the topic.

Draining Sportster Gas Tank & Filter Service
In order to service the fuel filter on your Sportster, you’ll need to drain the fuel tank. Bob demonstrates the best way to do this using a MityVac and a gasoline can. Once you follow his instructions and drain the fuel tank filter, cleaning any dirty parts and tightening any loose bolts, you can refill the tank with fuel and your bike should be good to go.

Harley Sportster Battery Removal & Seat Removal
In this quick demonstration of the Harley Sportster battery removal, you’ll learn how to remove your bike’s seat and side cover so you can check on the condition of your battery and its operating components. It is strongly recommended that you remove the negative cable of the battery first and replace it last when servicing your bike. If you remove the positive cable first, you risk causing a dangerous spark if the battery comes in contact with your bike’s frame. Bob has been dealing with these batteries for years and removes the neg from the battery. If this is your first time, we highly suggest removing neg from ground stud on the crankcase boss(see images)with wobble extension.

Harley Sportster Spark Plugs Replacement
Bob teaches you how to service the spark plugs on your Harley’s engine. Although you can clean and service your old spark plugs, Bob recommends just buying new ones because they are fairly inexpensive. You should purchase gapped, Harley-only spark plugs which usually come with a gap of 38-43,000th of an inch. After applying some anti-seize to the threads of the new plugs, you can thread them into the cylinder by hand and tighten them with a torque wrench and you’ll be good to go.

I used this video to remove the ignition switch in the process of removing the rear fairing cap (while adding cruse control to my Street Glide). However, with the ignition switch cap removed, the forks are locked, making it very difficult to get the fairing cap off.
I’d like to know how to unlock the forks with the ignition switch cap removed.
Hi, Eric. Try removing the ignition switch cap while keeping your front end straight forward.
My fork lock pin will not come up, so I cannot use my bike. I have a 2015 Electro glide, the cap turns to unlock position but the pin does not move.
Is there a video that shows how to remove the switch housing to replace the actual switch ?
Q: I have a 2008 Ultra. In February the starter began engaging on and off by itself when I turned the ignition switch to the on position without touching the start button. This has become very repeatable. If I let the bike start the starter continues to engage and dis-engage by itself. I replaced the starter relay. I ohmed out the start switch and it looks good (high/low resistance with off/on). With everything connected and the ignition on, there is a voltage on the black w/red output wire from the start switch to the relay. That voltage wonders from near zero to 10-11 volts. The starter engages as the voltage increases. Ideas?
A: The black wire with the red tracer should only be powered when depressing the start button with the run/off switch toggled to run. Suggest testing @ each end of the switch/switch harness.
Ticket 17287 Hello , I have lost my key to my 1999 spotter 1200: bought a new ingation switch , all the video I’ve watch said I have to have the key so I can turn the ing to accessory mode, I don’t have a key , please help
Dear Jerrie,
Thank you for your patience. In regards to your question-
We do not have a video that demonstrates replacing an ignition switch on a Sportster. You may be referring to a touring video.
Remove your ignition switch. Trace wires to the 1st junction and disconnect wire connections.
